ELC-779 Qualitative Research Methods and Design

4 semester credits


Students explore qualitative research methods (i.e. phenomenology, narrative inquiry, ethnography, participatory action research) and learn data collection and analysis techniques. Students design a research plan and write a draft of the Methods section of their dissertation Research Proposal.

Learning Outcome(s):  

By successfully completing this course, students will be able to: 

  • Identify and differentiate between qualitative research methods (i.e. phenomenology, narrative inquiry, ethnography, and participatory action research).
  • Critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of qualitative research methods to answer a research question.
  • Identity a qualitative research method suitable to answering a specific research question.
  • Design a research plan to answer a research question.
  • Develop a data collection plan, using appropriate qualitative research data collection methods.
  • Design a data analysis plan, using appropriate qualitative research data analysis methods.
  • Conduct a pilot research study.  
  • Write a draft of the Methods section for the dissertation Research Proposal, demonstrating appropriate use of qualitative approaches.
