ELC-777 Cultures of Inquiry and Research Design4 semester credits Students explore research methods, including qualitative, quantitative, participatory, Indigenous, critical race theory, feminist, and Black critical theory. Students examine ways of knowing, the nature of knowledge, and the politics of knowledge. They develop their dissertation research question, situating it within the relevant cultural and institutional contexts, and create a draft of their Concept Paper. By successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Explain a variety of research methods, including qualitative, quantitative, feminist, Indigenous, and participatory approaches.
- Critically analyze different ways of knowing and how they influence research design and inquiry.
- Evaluate the politics of knowledge production and the ethical implications of research in diverse cultural contexts.
- Develop a dissertation research question that is situated within relevant cultural, institutional, and epistemological contexts.
- Select a specific research practice (culture and methodology) to answer a dissertation research question.
- Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of a chosen methodology, as well as its suitability for the study of various kinds of research questions.
- Write a draft Concept Paper that articulates the research question, theoretical frameworks, and general methods (i.e. quantitative/qualitative) for the dissertation study.
