PSY-746 Psychoanalytic Theory/Therapy4 semester credits This course includes a consideration of the terminology, major figures, and theories of psychopathology and psychotherapy from psychoanalytic and neoanalytic orientations. Pre-requisites: PSY-711A1 Delivery Method: Distance/Electronically Mediated Grading Default: Letter Only Note: Elective Learning Outcome(s):
- Be conversant with the development and main features of these psychoanalytic theories. (A: Classical; B: Object Relations; C: Self Psychology; and D: Relational Theories. Know the significance of each major psychoanalytic theory and how each theory has contributed to our understanding of personality and/or therapy.
- Be able to employ in discussion and apply to clinical material the major terms in psychoanalytic psychotherapy: id, ego, superego, the unconscious, defense mechanisms (as a general concept and specific forms) object, object relations, transitional object, false self, mirroring, narcissism, transference, countertransference, and the “analytic third.”
