PSY-711B Research in Psychotherapy4 semester credits
This course provides an understanding of the psychotherapy literature in terms of issues of evidence and outcomes. Readings will cover how psychologists from different perspectives understand the practice of psychotherapy, including contemporary dialogue in the field. The course emphasizes the application of research methods to the study of psychotherapy process and outcome. Students are expected to learn how to apply research to make informed clinical decisions and to be familiar with evidence-based practice and related issues.

- Demonstrate understanding of the current literature on psychotherapy research, including empirically supported practices and evidence based practice.
- Demonstrate understanding of the literature on non-specific or common factors (e.g., therapeutic alliance) as they affect interventions across different forms of practice.
- Evaluate the quality of clinical research and its application to effective interventions.
- Describe the research on the role of culture and diversity in the practice and outcome of psychotherapy.
