CMFT-575 Therapy with African American Children and Adolescents

3 semester credits
This course provides an overview of systems-based theories and models that could be utilized by MFTs while working with black children and teens.  Learners will be introduced to child and adolescent assessment and diagnosis and common childhood disorders that will be viewed through a systemic lens and critiqued for their cultural sensitivity.   Learners will gain understanding of the clinical significance of dominant dyads and the ways that the five faces of oppression escalate the symptoms of common childhood disorders.  Ethical dilemmas related to minors, opportunities for collaboration with other professionals, and possibilities of developing parenting strategies sensitive to the African American populations served by MFTs will also be addressed.
