CMFT-574 Counseling Black Couples

3 semester credits
This course is an introduction to clinical work with black couples.  Learners will develop specific interventions for couples, apply those interventions to couple problems, anticipate client reactions, and conduct on-going assessment of client progress.  Attention will be given to historical issues and patterns in black families and the five faces of oppression that influence the dynamics of marriage and partnership.  Learners will gain understanding of the clinical significance of dominant dyads, exploitation, marginalization, minimization and cultural imperialism and the roles they play in escalating couple struggles, pain, hurt, anger, conflict and stuckness.  Treatment for black couples have the goal of restoring love, understanding, trust and partnership and peace.
