CMHC-533 Trauma-Related Counseling and Therapy

3 semester credits
This course addresses the impact of varying experiences of trauma on the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. Issues addressed include trauma that results from natural or other unexpected disasters, sexual assault, warfare, escaping violence and living in violent communities, immigration journeys, unexpected loss, and deportation. Trauma is examined through the impact on the brain regions, on memory, and emotional regulation and somatic responses. Attention is given to both short and long term approaches to crises, emergencies and disasters. Students will be required to learn how to connect with response management systems in their local communities and how to serve on multidisciplinary teams in response to crises and emergencies.
