CMHC-532 Couple and Family Counseling and Therapy

3 semester credits
This course promotes understanding the role of the mental health professional in facilitating relationship balance and well-being among couples and families. In contemporary society, there are heterosexual and same-sex, couples from diverse and multicultural backgrounds, (i.e., cultural, SES, age, intercultural, religious affiliation, and so forth). The course introduces family systems theory, models and techniques for counseling with couples and families, and identifies common stressors that affect balance in relationships. The role of cultural competency will be woven throughout the course.  In addition, attention is given to spousal or partner abuse assessment, detection and intervention strategies.
