CMHC-524 Counseling with African American/Black Heritage Individuals

3 semester credits
This course provides an overview of persons of African American cultural background, the history of African Americans in the United States, and, issues related to ways in which cultural factors interact with mental health and well-being. Students will learn about Afrocentric worldviews that build on a philosophy of the integration of the mind, body and spirit. Students engage in discussions about culture and identity (including gender, family, class, sexuality, race, age, tradition, values, religion, spirituality), and how these are relevant to counseling with persons of African descent. The effects of structural racism, historical hostility, and other forms of oppression on mental well-being are discussed.
