CMHC-521 Counseling with Latinx Individuals

3 semester credits
This course provides an overview of Latinx cultural background from various Spanish-speaking countries, the history of Latinx populations in the United States, issues related to immigration, acculturation and assimilation, identity challenges, and gender socialization; and ways in which cultural factors, sociopolitical forces, and access to resources interact with mental health and wellness. Students engage in discussions related to culture and identity, including gender, family, class, sexual orientation, race, age, tradition, values, religion, and how these are relevant to the counseling relationship and goal-setting and treatment planning.
