CMHC-504 Introduction to Counseling Skills and Techniques

3 semester credits
This course helps students develop specific skills in verbal and nonverbal communication, interpersonal relations, identification of client/student issues, and proposing/implementing appropriate counseling strategies. Fundamental counseling skills are emphasized such as active listening, attending, responding, building rapport, expressing empathy, along with more advanced skills such as finding meaning in difficult situations, reframing, effective challenging, leading, action planning and goal setting. Assessment and evidence of these skills affords students the ability to move to required Practicum field-based course. Students work with each other to practice skill building via a synchronous digital platform.
