CMHC-503 Professional Identity: Ethics and Legal Issues in Counseling

3 semester credits
This course examines the interwoven aspects of personal values as well as professional, ethical, and legal issues related to the practice of professional counseling.  The ACA Code of Ethics is examined as it guides counselors in providing and understanding concepts such as informed consent, client rights, danger to self and others, and malpractice as well as outlines professional regulations governing the practice and scope of counseling.  Strategies for collaboration with other mental health professionals will be explored as well as advocacy when it comes to social inequities and client success. The course also examines the major decision-making models used for resolving ethical dilemmas, and potentially, legal dilemmas.
